Breakthrough of the Vadlaheidi tunnel in North Iceland

The blasting of the last three meters separating the eastern portal from the western portal was celebrated in presence of the tunnel "godmother", the construction supervision, political representatives and many guests on Friday, 28th April 2017.

The driving operations on the 7'170 meters long single tube road tunnel with a bore cross-section of 65 m² started on 3rd July 2013. Since then, the miners have overcome considerable challenges, such as the filling of more than 30 liters per second of a 60°C hot water fissure, or the 500 liters per second of cold water pouring in from another fissure, as well as the high variability in the geology.

Thus, the celebration of the breakthrough and the accident-free driving operations was even more jovial.

The tunnel will be put into operation in 2018, reducing travel between Akureyri and Myvatn by 16 km.
